Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are enrolled in the Business Management and Hospitality Academy at a large comprehensive high school. The school is located in the middle of a large urban city. About 93% of the student population receives free meals twice a day and they come from low-income families. Many of my students will be the first to graduate from high school and will be the first generation to attend college. About 70% of the students come from immigrant families. I have students who are new to the country and are struggling to learn the language and the culture. Our small learning community has its challenges for different student learners. Daily instruction consists of core classes with connections to business management and hospitality. Combining these concepts with history can be challenging but creating projects that bridge the concepts together provide students the opportunity to apply the concepts to real-life.
Giving students the opportunity to apply the concepts and see how professional business plans and prototypes of products can be used to present pitches is important in our academy.
My Project
The students will be creating a business plan including a proposal of a t-shirt with a logo that represents their academy school theme and community. As part of their junior project-based learning activity the students will create a business plan to pitch the idea to the principal and have a prototype of the shirt to showcase during their presentations. The goal of this project is to have students work in groups to create a professional business plan that incorporated their financial literacy concepts they have learned in business management and the historical information they learned in history class to come up with a t-shirt concept.
With both the Easy Presses the students will have the ability to create the t-shirt logo and stamp it on a t-shirt as a prototype.
The students will have to first identify what the school theme represents and use their creativity to design the logo. Once they have done this, the students will create a professional business plan including the financial attributes of cost and creating the t-shirt. The shirt will be on display as part of their pitch presentation to the principal who will choose the winner and fund the actual t-shirts the students created.
