Help me give my students job skills through baking, following recipes, cleaning and much more! We have a wonderful Kitchen Aide Mixer that just needs a bowl, and various baking supplies to kick our bakery off.
My students are in grades 9-12+, in an intellectual disabilities classroom. We explore various job skills and social activities to help them to better communicate and work at developing job skills. They attend a public high school where approximately 50% live in poverty. We are a small school where 60% of students are open enrollment, leading to less funding from the state. When given the right tools my students are excited to try new things and expand their skill set.
My Project
The kitchen items we are seeking will help teach our students with intellectual disabilities many skills. Not only will it help teach them to bake and learn kitchen safety and sanitation, but it will help them with math skills associated with reading recipes and making money. They will also learn about marketing and develop writing strategies through maintaining a baking website. With these tools we will be able to sell our products at local markets to promote social skills and build confidence in our students. We have already seen tremendous gains in our classroom since beginning these activities. We are in need of more things to continue down our path to success!
