This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a diverse, first grade, integrated, collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental school-involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school everyday, ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My class of first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
It is easy to pick up a book from the library to read about how caterpillars make a chrysalis and then become a butterfly, but it is a lot more engaging to watch the entire process happen with your very own caterpillar. My class can have the opportunity to observe what happens in nature to turn a caterpillar into a butterfly. Students will be with their caterpillar every step of the way, realizing the joys and hardships that caterpillars experience along with their life journey. They will be able to have an understanding of a real-world situation. We may also measure the caterpillar before they become chrysalises.
Your gracious donations will enable my students to have a life-changing opportunity that will enhance our understanding of the life cycle of a butterfly.
We’re also asking for some classroom organizing supplies such as a stapler, paper clips and bins for storage of our materials.
