My Students
I'm sure you're aware of what it takes to build a quality competitive athletic program. The athletes are thirsty and excited for competition this year.
My students/athletes are comprised of youth at risk, low-income students and are challenged by a neighborhood that is filled with drugs, gangs, and violence.
Over 90% of the students are on the free breakfast and lunch programs offered by the state and federal government.
My students have academically performed extremely well over the past two years. They are one of the top elementary schools in Chicago, IL.
My Project
This will be the second year of competition for the girls volleyball team. They were mildly equipped last year with only a few training balls and a dozen or so competition balls.
By securing 20 pairs of knee pads, the girls will be encouraged to really compete at a higher level gaining greater skills.
The addition of 1 set of training volleyballs and 3 competition balls will enhance the growing interest in volleyball in the classroom. The number of 3rd and 4th graders are so excited to play with quality crafted equipment and not "hand me downs!"
I am also requesting 1 cart to store all of the materials when they are not being used.
All the students and athletes will learn to properly care for the gifts they receive, as they have in the past when donors have stepped up.
Most importantly, the proper equipment in the proper environment will keep them safe and out of harms way.
The streets around the school are extremely hostile. The ever increasing crime and danger these children face is real. The opportunity to keep a child focused on the future through strong academics and a quality physical education program help to build their self-confidence and self-worth.
