This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have approximately 750 students enrolled in our school from a variety of backgrounds. Our school is a Title I school and provides free breakfast and lunch to every student. One in six of our students is qualified for special education services, and we have more than ten different languages spoken in our school. Our students always strive to be positive, even when they see that we don't have the things that other schools may have.
Our students want the opportunity to participate in competitive athletic programs with all of the materials that they need to be safe and successful.
Our students can choose to participate in a number of after school athletic programs. We offer boys' and girls' volleyball, cross-country, track and field, boys' and girls' soccer, boys' and girls' basketball, wrestling, and softball. There is a lack of funding to maintain proper safety equipment, sports equipment, and uniforms for all sports at the same time. We are able to purchase a few items each year and this means that our equipment becomes outdated very quickly, but we make the best of it. Our students don't complain; they just show up ready to learn and grow.
My Project
I am requesting new uniform shorts for our girls' volleyball teams. Uniform shorts for girls wear out, and we do not receive funding to replace them. Our students cannot afford to provide their own uniforms. Our jerseys will last a while longer, but we do not have enough shorts to uniform our teams.
Our students need the support to have uniforms so they can feel pride in their school, and not worry about feeling like they are not as good as schools who do.
Being properly uniformed helps students feel like a part of the team and allows for proper movement during game play. We simply do not have the funding to replace our outdated equipment. Please consider supporting our students in developing a love of sports and physical activity.
