This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have approximately 750 students enrolled in our school from a variety of backgrounds. Our school is a Title I school and provides free breakfast and lunch to every student. One in six of our students is qualified for special education services, and we have more than ten different languages spoken in our school. Our students always strive to be positive, even when they see that we don't have the things that other schools may have.

Our students want the opportunity to participate in competitive athletic programs with all of the materials that they need to be safe and successful.

Our students can choose to participate in a number of after-school athletic programs. We offer boys' and girls' volleyball, cross-country, track and field, boys' and girls' soccer, boys' and girls' basketball, wrestling, and softball. There is a lack of funding to maintain proper safety equipment, sports equipment, and uniforms for all sports at the same time. We are able to purchase a few items each year and this means that our equipment becomes outdated very quickly, but we make the best of it. Our students don't complain; they just show up ready to learn and grow.

My Project

Our Girls' Seventh and Eighth Grade Volleyball teams have been struggling to find funding to replace broken and worn out materials. Our current pole system's wench is broken and we have tried our best this season to make things work. Funding cuts have made it impossible for us to replace items ranging from uniforms and knee pads to our net system. There are no funds in our budget to replace our aging equipment, our current pole system is over ten years old. We are very responsible, but normal wear and tear have taken their toll.

Our aging pole/net system is beyond repair; replacing the poles is our priority because our girls cannot compete if we cannot use our nets.

Our girls work very hard to raise money to get the necessary materials to play, and we just cannot afford to replace our poles without help. Without poles, our teams will be unable to practice and compete.

Our Volleyball program offers our students a way to stay physically fit, builds self-esteem, and engages them in a positive way in school. Our teams focus on building each player into a leader on and off of the courts. The team offers our girls a positive outlet and provides the supports they need to thrive both academically and socially. For many of our players, this is their first experience playing volleyball at all. Our students deserve the opportunity to play, school funding should not eliminate their opportunities to engage in athletics. Our girls have a true love of the sport and deserve the opportunity to participate.
