The students at my school come from all over the world. Many of them are first-generation Americans or immigrants themselves. Most live in the neighborhood area and attend our general admission school. Over 95% of our students are from low-income families and received free lunch. None of them have ever played organized volleyball before coming to high school. Playing sports creates a new family for these students, teaches them how to be good people and responsible, teaches them grit, teaches them how to best manage their time, and so many other lessons! Sports are a way to get ahead in life and further their education and go to college in many situations.
My Project
Volleyball has become an increasingly popular sport at my school. It’s a great team sport, and one that students can continue to play through all stages of their life! We, as a school, have been lucky, and are able to add an additional freshman team for girls this upcoming school year! This has been the highest turnout for a girls sport ever! While this is very exciting for the players, as a coach I realize that we don’t have enough equipment for all of the teams. Players have to take turns using the balls and people have to sit out in drills because we don’t have enough for everyone to be able to participate. Adding an additional 10 volleyballs would allow our new freshman team to run practice and games properly and give the athletes the greatest chance of improving and learning their new skill.
