This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Dum da dum! Ratta tat tat! Boom boom boom! Crash! Seriously, babies are born knowing how to bang on a drum. My students shine when I bring the drums out, even though they are small and old, and do not have the proper drum head to teach technique.

I work in a public elementary school in North Carolina.

We are a low income Title 1 school, and many of our students have little or no support at home. We have a small amount of parent involvement. Don't get me wrong though, our families are wonderful. But the parents have to work many hours to make ends meet. They are good people who teach their children values and manners, and from that, the children are grateful for everything they have. They hug you every morning and afternoon! In a lot of cases, the teacher is the most stable adult in the child's life. That's why we all make sure to give lots of hugs back!

My Project

I have recently learned the curriculum of World Music Drumming. This curriculum uses drums to not only teach musical concepts but character traits such as respect, kindness, and teamwork. It provides students with constant opportunities to boost their confidence and pride. My students love the drums! However, I have very few drums worthy of any drum technique. I fundraise by selling DVDs of concerts but that brings in only a small amount each year. Unfortunately, it has been several years since I have had any type of budget from the school. Funding this project will allow me to provide instruments for my students that they deserve to learn on!

This project is important to me because I want the best for my students.

World Music Drumming will expand the successes I have already had with them and give them invaluable experience and knowledge.
