This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recess can be a challenge. It's even harder when the playground has been temporarily shut down due to unsafe swing sets! We've had only the field and basketball court to use for over a month, and not enough items for students to use. This can definitely lead to bullying situations.
I teach kindergarten at a high-poverty, Title I elementary school in a small town in Texas.
As a grade level, we go to recess together. This means 88 students playing at the same time. Right now we have a soccer ball, 2 basketballs, and 1 kickball (that needs to be aired up every couple days). Our other kickball doesn't keep air at all, so we can't use it. Many students attempt to create their own games, but this can often lead to bullying and students being excluded or picked on. If we had more to play with, I think these situations would decrease.
My Project
As a kickoff to our new equipment, I'm requesting copies of several titles in the Getting Along Series. These books touch on sharing, taking turns, talking to work it out, valuing and accepting each other, and joining in and playing. I am also asking for copies of the book Bullying in Schools to provide to parents if situations continue to arise with their children. The equipment this proposal requests is for indoor and outdoor recess. For outdoor recess we are in need of playground balls and jump ropes. For indoor recess a variety of activity scarves, movement mats, boomwhackers, and magnetic toys would be very beneficial.
The kindergarteners at our school love to move, dance, play, and have fun.
These recess materials would allow them a greater variety of activities so that they can share fun friendship experiences, instead of creating negative bullying memories. Please help us transform our recess, by providing new play opportunities, so we can be bully-free!
