At our school, we don't think bullying should be thought of as "part of growing up." Bullying is not tolerated by adults at our school. We are working on creating a climate where students don't tolerate bullying either. We want our students to learn how to advocate for themselves and each other.
Our school is made up of about 700 students coming from a wide variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
We started the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program last year. The students, staff and families were so excited to be a part of this school wide endeavor. We made posters, had assemblies, did cheers, sang songs, signed banners, wore bracelets and had a successful family night. We even had an anti-bullying pumpkin at the pumpkin lighting! We want to keep this momentum going! Having these resources will allow us to keep the program fresh, exciting and current.
My Project
I am requesting a Flip video camera, poster packs, 10 anti-bullying book titles some with CD's, expo markers, a card set, and sharpies. These resources will allow us to "spice up" the second year of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. In order to keep the students engaged, we have to keep things new and exciting. These books will give us new material for classroom lessons and individual or small group instruction. The books cover a wide variety of scenarios that we can work through with the students. Having the Flip Cam will allow us to "market" the key components of the Olweus program. The students love to see themselves in role-plays and interviews. We can keep the videos and use them for years to come.
We are starting the Peaceful School Bus program on all bus routes this year. One of the key components of the program is treating your bus-mates kindly. The markers and books will be used to facilitate the route meetings. The students will engage in team building and problem solving activities. We want their bus routes to become small communities within the school where they feel safe and supported by each other.
Having these resources will help an entire school--not just one classroom.
Donating to this project will affect about 700 students from grades K-5. All of our students deserve to feel safe at school. This will help us overcome the challenge we face with having students advocate for themselves and each other. We will be able to teach them socially appropriate ways to deal with bullying as a bully, target or bystander.
