My Students

Help us hit the mark! We know that students reading level increases by the largest percentage when the books they read during a guided reading lesson is at their instructional level. However, we don't have enough books to meet the needs of our students.

Our students are a vibrant, diverse group from different backgrounds.

We are a high poverty school in western South Carolina. We are a school of the arts and offer lots of opportunities for our students to develop their own unique talents and interests. Many of our students come to us without the experiences necessary to be good readers. Our school was one of the first schools to fully implement our districts literacy model. This model features guided reading in small groups with the teacher. We need to be able to provide books at the groups instructional level, but, we do not have the resources available to do that effectively. As the Reading Interventionist, I have some 6 packs of books at various levels, but we need more. I am asking for additional 6 packs at different reading levels to help us build a leveled reading library. Teachers can then check out 6 packs for use during guided reading that are high interest AND at the instructional level of the students.

My Project

I am requesting nine sets of six packs of books that will be housed in a new leveled library. These include historical fiction and nonfiction, science related books, and fictional texts. These will be added to other six packs that I have been using and some that teachers had in their classrooms. I want teachers to be able to go into that book room, pull books that are at the instructional level, or the level that the child can read with some support, of their students. We will use these books to help improve reading achievement in our classrooms. The purchase of these books, will help us get a good start on developing a leveled library. Then teachers can choose the best books for their students and help them reach their individual goals.

We know we get the biggest bang for our buck when we hit the target of the child's instructional level.

When we do that, the growth is phenomenal. We have lots of staff development on improving reading and much of it centers on making sure that students are reading at their instructional level. Your donation will help us do just that, and our students will have the best chance of becoming the best readers they can be.
