This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
From their socioeconomic statuses, ethnicities, and reading and writing levels, to their interests and aspirations, my students make up an incredibly diverse community. One shared factor in many students’ lives, however, is stress. Some feel pressure and anxiety caused by the rigor of AP courses while others struggle with toxic stress resulting from poverty, long work hours, or family hardships.
Artistic projects can be moments of relief from this stress.
I have seen their creativity during classroom activities and have received positive feedback from students whenever I have given them the opportunity to create artistic projects during class.
My Project
In researching creative outlets that reduce stress, I discovered the Bullet Journal system. The Bullet Journal is a therapeutic tool that can serve as a to-do list, diary, notepad, and artistic outlet. One example of a bullet journal component is a “habit tracker”, that notes when one is able to floss or get eight hours of sleep.
Bullet Journaling provides a method for students to stay organized, track and reinforce healthy habits, set goals for themselves (both academic and otherwise), externalize memories, and express their creativity through drawing and writing.
I am hoping to start a club for students that would explain the basic premise of bullet journaling and enable students to build their own journals that they can continue to use outside of school. Within the club, students would learn calligraphy skills and share ideas and their journal designs with each other. The club would provide a forum for students to display their artistic ability and create a space for them to support each other in their pursuit of healthy habits and goals.
Pilot clubs do not receive any school funding, so I am seeking donations in order to make this club a reality. All funds would be dedicated to purchasing the necessary supplies: durable journals and calligraphy pens. As not all students are able to afford these resources, providing supplies will eliminate any financial barrier to participation. My students deserve the best, so please, help give it to them!
