My students need LEGOs to explore the wonderful world of architecture. Young elementary students will learn about and create architecture models with these familiar toys.
My students are amazing and a joy to work with. My school is a kindergarten though eighth grade charter school in Anchorage, Alaska. The students here are primarily Alaskan Native with ancestry in many Alaskan Native tribes including Tlingit, Haida, Unangan, Athabaskan, and many others.
My school's focus on cultural learning and native ways of knowing has inspired me to teach my students about Alaskan Native arts and culture.
I encourage my students to treat my classroom as their studio and a place where they are safe and free to express themselves. In this way, my students can not only learn about their rich and diverse culture, but they can also help to contribute to it.
My Project
Students will use LEGOs to gain hands-on experience in a series of lessons about architecture. Each group of students will be tasked with the job of designing and creating various public buildings needed in a city. Students will have to create and follow a building plan. They will also need to write about the function of their building (hospital, post office, police station, etc.) and how their design works to fulfills that function.
This familiar toy will provide students a familiar and fun way to learn about architecture.
After participating in this project students will look at the public building they encounter in new and different ways.
After the conclusion of the architecture project, the LEGOs will be retained in the classroom and will be used in future projects. They will also provide engagement for student during recess on bad weather days when students are forced to play indoors.
