My students need building materials for creating cob benches in our sustainable garden. Cob is an environmentally safe mixture of sand, clay, straw, dirt, and plaster.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As part of our Environmental Technology class, we are focused on building sustainable societies. Part of our curriculum involves growing food in our garden located immediately behind our classroom. We would like to add seating made from natural materials to promote spending more time outside.
My students are amazing people who are just beginning to discover their own talents.
Having hands-on projects builds their confidence to tackle real world challenges.
Many of my students spend so much time in an urban environment that they have forgotten what it feels like to connect with the natural world. Watching them outside, working in the garden, getting their hands dirty and smiling about it, makes my day.
My Project
Having seating areas outside will encourage my students to spend more time enjoying the garden that they manage. Currently, there is no seating available unless we move furniture from the classroom to the garden. We want to use natural materials to build cob benches, which will be a learning project in itself! Students will design the benches and participate in building them. Then, they will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep, building pride in accomplishment.
Donations to this project will allow us to get the materials we need that are not available through normal channels.
Learning how to contribute to sustainable living through this project will stick with my students well into their adult lives, creating more ecologically responsible citizens!
