Our classroom is full of excited, creative, confident, thoughtful, and caring, 10- and 11-year old children who are exploring themselves and their world through literature. These are 29 children from a variety of backgrounds. Two of them are brand new to our school and we are excited to share our love of learning with them. This is a special group of children to me. They are sweet kind and hearted. Of my 29 families, 5 are siblings of previous students.
Participating in the international program, The Battle of the Books is a long standing tradition that our 4th grade students look forward to qualifying for.
Students are challenged to read at least ten books from this set list. We read the books together and independently all year long. Then, at the end of the year, we have a day long Book Battle and celebration of reading.
The best way to ensure the students read these great pieces of literature, is simply to have them readily available. Class sets of a few of these great books allows me as the teacher, to use these novels as the "textbook". Students will practice and apply their reading skills with these novels.
My Project
Having some class sets of our titles from our Battle of the Books lists will allow my students to be able to have the shared experience of literature. It is like watching an amazing movie together.
They will know what each other has experienced and will be able to generate thoughtful and reflective discussions.
By having the books in their hands, they go right back to the "good part" and reread for deeper understanding.
This donation of class sets of books will really help our 4th graders build up their love of reading as they build up their reading skills.
This donation will reach beyond my classroom. These books will be shared with the other 4th and 5th grade classrooms at my site as their students also get qualified for our Battle of the Books. These books will be used again and again in three year cycle rotations, as our tradition of the Battle of the Books continues for the next 16 or more years.
