Building Tomorrow's Leaders: Educational Field Trip to Disney World
We need funding for our leadership trip to Disney World. For some of our students, Disney has always been a dream, but your donation can help make it a reality!
Rayauna is a 7th grader at our school. She is a motivated student and a promising leader. Actively participating in our school entrepreneurship business and organizing meetings, Rayauna truly displays leadership qualities.
Makayla is an 8th grader at JSES. She was one of the founding students of the Montessori middle school program at our school and is a fantastic leader. She serves as the lead peer mediator in our middle school community.
To raise money for their 7th and 8th-grade trip, Rayauna and Makayla along with their classmates, have decided upon several fundraisers which included selling smoothies, dress down day passes to our peers, and hot chocolate and popcorn at our PTA meetings. In the near future, they plan on having a car wash, selling chocolates, and facilitating a school dance to contribute to their trip fund.
They are applying for the student-led grant because they "want to be exposed to this wonderful educational opportunity and need the help of donors like you".
Our students are the first class of middle school students at JSES, a title 1 school in urban Charleston, which has recently been converted to Montessori. The Montessori model emphasizes autonomy, peace education, service learning, and 21st-century skills. A key component of the program is for students to see the relevance to what they're learning in the classroom and the outside world.
We are raising money to help fund a middle school culmination trip to the Disney Youth Education Program during the month of May. The program consists of guided, in‐park educational field studies with courses in Applied Sciences, Environmental Studies, Liberal Arts and Leadership Development. Students will participate in 2 courses throughout the duration of this trip: an Energy and Waves Physics Lab and a class on Managing their Brand/ Leadership. This trip will help tie together many key components of the 7th and 8th-grade curriculum as well as prepare our students for high school.
In Their Own Words
The goal we are trying to reach here is to teach us more about being leaders in our community. Learning how to take initiative to do things is also a part of this goal. Our 8th graders will have the opportunity to pass down their wisdom and experience to the 7th graders, and we can celebrate our last time together before the 8th graders move on to high school.
This project has taught us a lot We have made the most of this leadership opportunity by coming up with ways and unique ideas to reach our goal of raising enough money to go on the trip. Going on the trip, we will feel proud knowing that we made this trip happen by our own fundraising, writing letters to sponsors and donors, and creating this grant here too.
This project is important to us because it will help boost our leadership skills & transfer what we've learned to real world situations. We spent a majority of the year building a new community as the very first Montessori class, and we want to pass the legacy on to upcoming classes.
