Building Thinking in the Math Classroom with Mobile Whiteboards!

My Project

We fondly call my classroom the Learning Lab! After teaching from a cart in 5 different classrooms daily for 3 years, I finally was able to get my own classroom after an old computer lab was transformed into a classroom space! Because this room was not originally designed as a classroom, there is only one whiteboard in the classroom.

Last year, the Math Department did a book study of Peter Liljedahl's book "Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12: 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning." The following excerpt shares what the research revealed: "What emerged as optimal was to have the students standing and working on vertical non-permanent surfaces (VNPSs) such as whiteboards... It did not matter what the surface was, as long as it was vertical and erasable (non-permanent).

The fact that it was non-permanent promoted more risk taking, and the fact that it was vertical prevented students from disengaging. Taken together, having students work, in their random groups, on VNPSs had a massive impact on transforming previously passive learning spaces into active thinking spaces where students think, and keep thinking, for upwards of 60 minutes."

The students in our Learning Lab are those who have historically struggled with math; with over 50% have an identified learning disability. Together with my co-teachers, we intentionally design lessons and activities to make the Algebra I and Geometry content more accessible, engaging, and focused on real world problem solving skills. These mobile whiteboards will offer ultimate flexibility for the full implementation of this teaching strategy. The most long term, impactful thing that we can do for this group of students is build their confidence and critical thinking skills. These mobile whiteboards will allow students to take risks and increase their thinking and ultimately support maximum learning!
