Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a proud Title I school, where 100% of students are on free lunch and free breakfast. My students live in one of the most dangerous parts of their urban city of Oakland California, but overcome all obstacles.

Many gangs surround our community and my students all live in poverty yet do not let their disadvantages take hold of them in the classroom.

Each day these children come to school ready to learn putting their education first.

99% of my students are below a 5th grade reading level. At the start of the year in August, many students were reading between a k-3rd grade level. After a few months of direct instruction with phonics and early literacy with what we already had in the classroom we are making headway and the student achievement gap is closing. With dedication, some students have already improved their reading levels by an entire grade level! We still have more work to do!

My Project

My students need access to a wide range of books which will allow for more literacy groups to be created dependent on reading lexile scores. I can allow for closed reading among partners with the same book to help with fluency and accuracy when reading. Currently, I do not have a wide range of books in my classroom as a first year teacher. I need your help to grow this class library so I can level it based on students reading levels.

Scholastic News articles will help bring current events to our class that will allow them to become more culturally competent and aware of worldly events through literacy.

I will also be able to differentiate learning groups with a variety of reading leveled groups to promote equity and continuous group work which touch base on some 5th grade Common Core Standards.

Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards are essential to continue growing my literacy projects in my classroom. I would love to be able to find more literacy projects that I can bring into the classroom. My students have an interest in math, and I would love to teach a financial literacy unit to my students at an early age who live in poverty. Teachers Pay Teachers is a great and credible resource to get materials from that have been created and reviewed by teachers throughout the nation. This site will give me a wide range of access to find creative, and engaging material that will touch base on 5th grade Common Core Standards.

It is important students have an interest in their education. With your help, we can give these kids access to material of interest which will promote learning when they are engaged.
