Help me give my students the opportunity to truly foster their love for reading through participating in authentic book clubs. I am looking for funding to help build a library of popular and educationally rich literature.
My students are a diverse group of learners who love to explore & create! Our school population has nearly 70% on free or reduced lunch. My 3rd grade classroom is comprised of eager students who perform academically both beyond grade level, as well as some who are currently performing nearly two years below their current grade level expectations. Despite a wide variety of learning levels, my students are excited about creating their own learning experiences. Unfortunately, many of my students bring challenges with them to school each day which can impact their opportunity to learn.
Knowing that I want to inspire them to continue growing & learning each day requires creative methods of teaching on my part too!
A goal in my classroom is foster a curiosity for learning. Even more than just learning the material, I expect my students to share that learning with others. Simply using packaged reading and writing projects will not inspire the "love of learning" I am trying to instill. They appreciate every chance they have to create & share their own projects.
My Project
I welcome your support to help me as I work to fund my book club project! We just finished a whole class book study with amazing results!
"Wow, I loved reading this book!" and "This book was awesome!" are just a few examples of the exclamations my students shared following our class book study of the I Survived the Children's Blizzard of 1888 by Lauren Tarshis.
Through intense reading, literature study and class discussions, during our whole group book study, my students are now highly motivated to create their own small group book clubs! These book clubs will foster their love to continue reading and discussing good books while practicing the fundamental reading skills we have been learning in class.
My students are so eager to read various chapter books, that I would like build a strong classroom library to be able to provide them with this book club opportunity. During our class book study, I have found my students were more engaged and connected with the characters and events in these style of books, far beyond simply reading short passages or simple readers from our standard reading books.
I am requesting approximately 2-3 different books within each chapter book series. My expectation is that once they finish their first book club, they will be motivated to continue reading another book within the same series! Once students have finished the book from their 1st book club, they will create book trailers, advertisements or special projects to share their series book with the class. It is my hope that these special presentations will create a "contagious" literacy movement in our classroom which will motivate other students to try a new series or genre that they might not have been familiar with until their good friends had recommended it!
