This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our class is a team! We work, play, learn, and solve problems together. Every student in our class knows that many minds are better than a single mind, and we always strive to support each other, even though teamwork can be tough!
My students attend a small public school outside of a major city.
Classes are small, about 16 students each, due to our low-income status, and there are usually 2 classes per grade level. This means many of our students have been in class together for multiple years. They are almost more like siblings - many times hugging and laughing, but sometimes crying and yelling as well. Self-control and collaboration are major goals for us as a class community. We also have a majority of our students learning English as a second language.Over half of our families are first or second generation immigrants, and the numbers are growing. Because of the increasing population and anticipated surge in student population, our school has been approved for reconstruction which will begin this year. What a wonderful opportunity! However, it means that our students have lost a huge chunk of their play space to temporary trailers and don't have many resources to, as my students put it, "get out their energy
My Project
My students need to play! They need to run, jump, throw, and catch with each other! They also need opportunities outside of the classroom to play games with each other and practice good sportsmanship. Imagine what they have currently: two partially deflated balls and chalk nubs I purchased from the dollar store. Now imagine the kids walking outside with no sidewalk to draw on and only those two small balls to share. Not pretty, is it? I'd love to give them all the tools they need to learn how to work together and have fun outside, and we need your help!
A few playground items might not seem to be a huge deal to many people, but in our school, those resources are coveted!
A lot of our students go home to sit with in babysitters' apartments until their parents come home at night. They don't have the opportunity to get outside and play, so school is a main place for them to have fun, exercise, and learn social skills. It's also the perfect time for them to interact with other in a positive way and practice their problem solving skills.
More than half of students from low‑income households
