Building Success Through Independence at School

My Students

Our classroom is filled with diverse learners with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. We serve students with Autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and other special needs. We teach academics alongside a variety of important life and school skills, including social skills, self-management, and functional/ adaptive skills. All of our students are assigned to a general education homeroom where they are each included the maximum extent possible.

One of the most important skills we can foster in our students is independence.

Our students need explicit instruction and repeated practice to build this important life skill. With continued practice, our students will increase their success in a variety of inclusive settings. Our goal is to give each student the tools they need to be successful at school and in their community.

My Project

To provide explicit instruction on independence, we need to set up a system where each student is able to practice previously learned academic skills in a structured independent system. We will use these materials, lamination sheets, velcro, glue sticks, and storage boxes/bins, to create task boxes that contain English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Life Skills activities. These will include matching, sorting, tracing, and other activities using manipulatives and visuals to support student independence. These tasks have been created by other special education teachers and are distributed as electronic documents. In order to give students access to these tasks, they need to be printed, cut out, laminated, Velcro added, and stored for appropriate student access. Once these tasks are prepared, students will complete 1-3 independent tasks each day, and they will receive positive reinforcement for staying on task and doing work by themselves.

The more that these students can do independently, the more they can transfer these skills to everyday use even after they leave school.
