Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 7th grade life science in one of three junior highs in an enlarged city school district. We have a large population of economically disadvantaged students and a limited budget for supplies. The materials I am requesting would help make the time I spend with my students more effective and beneficial.
Our school district qualifies as economically disadvantaged and about 75% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch due to living at or below the national poverty level. Our budget is being cut due to the economic recession. As a result, teachers are forced to seek alternative means of obtaining materials that would benefit our students.
Because we have limited resources and most students do NOT bring basic supplies with them to school, it becomes the teacher's responsibility to get what we feel is most needed by any means necessary. I supply my students with pens, pencils, paper, notebooks and folders daily. I am requesting Dry Erase boards and markers for students. This is for the purpose of review and enrichment of the lessons. Since my students are so low functioning they tend to be embarrassed to answer as well as ask questions, for fear of being wrong or not sounded proper. I want to use the Dry Erase boards, so students can write answers or questions on them and hold them up for me to see. I think this will help to raise awareness and self-esteem for my students.
Your donation would benefit the 100 students that I am teaching this year and hundreds more in years to come. I have spent thousands of my own dollars trying to provide the best education for my students during my 5 years and feel that with your help I can begin to meet the needs of my underachieving students in my poverty stricken district. Your donation would be GREATLY appreciated by my students and me.
