In a rapidly evolving world, where science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills are increasingly crucial, the integration of innovative educational tools has become paramount. This project, "Building STEM Literacy with LEGO SPIKE," aims to harness the power of LEGO Education's SPIKE Prime platform to enhance student learning, particularly the (over 25%) English Language Learners (ELLs) in my classes.
Goals of the Project:
1. Promote STEM Literacy: The primary goal of this project is to promote STEM literacy among students, focusing on non-English and limited English speakers.
2. Enhance Problem-Solving Skills: LEGO SPIKE offers a unique platform for students to tackle real-world problems through project-based learning.
3. Boost Collaboration: Collaborative learning is vital in today's global society. LEGO SPIKE encourages teamwork and communication as students work together to design, build, and program their creations. Our project will emphasize the importance of effective collaboration, particularly for ELLs, who can benefit from improved language skills through interaction with peers.
4. Increase Language Proficiency: For ELLs, mastering English is essential for academic and future career success. STEM projects provide a context for language acquisition.
5. Cultivate Creativity: STEM is not just about facts and formulas; it's also about creativity and innovation. LEGO SPIKE allows students to express their creativity by designing and building unique solutions to problems. This project aims to nurture students' creativity and encourage them to think outside the box.
6. Foster Inclusivity: LEGO SPIKE is an inclusive tool that allows students of diverse backgrounds and abilities to participate in STEM activities. By specifically targeting ELLs, we aim to ensure that all students have equal access to STEM education.
