Building Something Wonderful (With Gingerbread?)

My students need 9 gingerbread stories, 11 books about architecture, designing and baking gingerbread houses, and a toaster oven with pans, food coloring and sprinkles.

My Students

You hear a lot about STEM and STEAM but where is the real creativity? My kids have been studying communities and now want to build some houses. They are ready to combine cooking (math), baking (science) and creativity and architecture.

Our stable neighborhood is changing.

Many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel. 18.4% of the families receive supplemental Social Security income or public assistance. Over 60% of my students qualify for free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. One out of every 9 students is in ELL programs. We have students who have recently arrived from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, as well as natives from Alaskan rural areas. Many of my students suffer from low self esteem. We have a problem with bullying on the playground and teasing and name calling in the classroom. We need to change the climate in our classroom. Working together on a cooperative project is a big step in the right direction.

My Project

My second graders have been studying our community as part of their social studies. They have learned about historical buildings/sites and neighborhoods. Now, I propose a delicious STEM to STEAM challenge to have them work together to design and construct a gingerbread community with many structures. I am asking for 8 gingerbread story books including the classic Gingerbread Boy and 11 books about architecture, design and making gingerbread houses, a toaster oven, and food coloring and some sprinkles. My second graders will work with sixth graders who study engineering and architecture as part of their science. These two groups of students will build a gingerbread community and then Skype with a master baker at the Captain Cooke Hotel who builds a gingerbread community every year. They will be able to compare/contrast their engineered communities and discuss what it is like to live where they do.

My students do not often get the chance to work together to accomplish a common goal.

This project will provide my students with the opportunity to work together on a science/art/cooking project. Students will read about gingerbread. They will also learn about architecture. Then, they will have the opportunity to work with older students to design and construct a gingerbread community. Our school has no funds for this type of project. Please help.
