Building Socially and Emotionally Resilient Learners With Books, Games, Crafts
Help me give my students books, supplies, and games to build and practice their social and emotional skills and create their own calming and mindful tools to help regulate their emotions through crafting.

My Project
My students are referred for counseling services with me because they are struggling with an emotional issue and/or have a disability that is impacting their behavior in the classroom, as well as their ability to relate to their peers and thrive at school. Nearly half of the children in the zip code of my school, which is a public elementary school in south Brooklyn, are estimated to be below the poverty line.
Reading books about characters facing similar challenges and learning coping skills through games helps students identify their feelings and utilize strategies, such as deep breathing, to improve their well-being.
In counseling, students also practice examining their thought patterns and reframing their thoughts, which in turn can positively impact their feelings and behavior. Books and games help students grow socially and emotionally in an accessible and inclusive way that does not make students feel targeted because of their difference or challenge, but instead normalizes their experiences and respects different learning styles. Books and games, like the ones in this project, have helped my students build social and emotional resilience by facilitating activities during which students recognize what choices they have that might better meet their needs.
This year, with supplies from this project, students will also have the opportunity to create their very own calm down kit that they can use when they need a break to reset before returning to learning. Students will create mindful and breathing tools as part of their calm down kit that they can use during breaks to help them relax and manage big emotions that are interfering with their well-being and ability to focus. Many of my students love crafts and hands-on activities so they will be excited to engage in this project and have tangible calming tools that they made themselves!
