Building Social Skills to Improve Student Engagement
Help me give my students access to the materials they need to learn how to develop appropriate social skills and to create meaningful relationships amongst their peers and teachers.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I provide speech-language therapy for students in an urban setting who have a variety of learning strengths and challenges, including autism and other developmental disabilities. Each and every one of my students is special and unique. The students participate in a life skills and transitional programs to prepare them to be independent and successful adults. We practice skills including how to foster and maintain friendships, obtain jobs, and live independently. Our students are a shining light in this school and deserve all the best!
My Project
These materials contain curriculums and activities that will aid in teaching my students age-appropriate social skills. While many students struggle to acquire social skills, it is particularly difficulty for students with autism. Since the majority of my students are individuals with autism, they would truly benefit from access to these specialized curriculums and materials. The ability to establish relationships is critically import to a student's engagement and my students have significant difficulty with these skills. Specifically, my students have difficulty understanding nonverbal language, inferences, problem solving social situations, and conversational skills which makes it very difficult for them to develop friendships.
Without specialized social skills instruction, my students have significant difficulty developing relationships with their teachers and peers, which makes it difficult for them to be engaged in school.
I am confident that through the use of these materials, my students will be able to participate in an effective social skills curriculum and will acquire the necessary skills to form relationships with others.
Without meaningful relationships, students become disengaged. It is my hope that all of my students will learn the skills needed to create positive relationships with others and will keep them engaged in the school community.
