I have a special relationship with my class. I teach at a very small school in a mountain community with one class per grade level. A few years ago I taught this same class as second graders, and now that I've moved to fourth grade, I get a second opportunity to inspire them and help them see something special within themselves that perhaps they didn't know was there. These kids love music! Many of them chose to sing in last year's spring talent show. They are constantly begging me to turn on music while they work. They enjoy a channel that plays classical versions of current popular music. Their quiet singing, while they are working at their desks, motivates me to want to give them more even though our school does not have a music program.
I would love to put a ukulele in every student's hand and give them the opportunity to show their family, friends, and community what I get to see every day.
My hope is that we can build memories and self-confidence as we learn to play the ukulele together with the support of members from our community.
My Project
Over time, expectations for student performance in reading, writing, and math have grown, and they keep growing. In my opinion, we need to start giving back to these students in the form of enrichment activities like music that help build culture, appreciation of individual talents, and self-confidence.
My hope is that these ukuleles will provide my students with a positive release that will help to balance the rigors of reading, writing, and math.
Ukulele lessons and practice would be strategically inserted throughout the day as a "brain break" between more rigorous lessons. Another part of this project that I love is the opportunity to have guests from the community share their talents and love of music in my classroom. My students and I would feel truly blessed to have this opportunity. The end result would be allowing every student the opportunity to perform during our annual Christmas program and our spring talent show.
