My Project
Developing new physical skills helps students develop self-confidence. Circus arts, particularly stilts and juggling, are especially empowering. These skills help students develop goal setting skills and a growth mindset as they are trying new things and experiencing steady, gradual success.
Walking on stilts literally helps children feel big which is empowering, while the balance required to master walking on stilts strengthens children's core muscles and their self-regulation skills.
Learning to juggle strengthens children's visual tracking and their ability to focus, which are both support reading. As students work with partners, they practice communication skills, sharing and waiting for a turn.
Practicing circus arts is a fun and exciting way to build SEL skills that have been slower to develop as children spend more time on screens. Because these activities are novel, students will be more likely to try something new as nobody else has experience either. Working at something new and then experiencing success with it is how self-confidence grows.
