Building Self Confidence Though Coding

My students need Spheros, the original app-enabled robotic ball, and covers to protect the robotic ball.

My Students

My goal for this year is to keep my students engaged, challenged and build their confidence. I plan to meet my goal by teaching my students how to program. Programming keeps my students engaged, they will use STEM skills to code and when they are successful it builds their confidence.

My high school students are predominately from low income families and English is their second language.

Many of my students struggle to pass their classes because of a limited English vocabulary, lower reading level and family responsibilities. These students want to learn and go to college, but it can be a very difficult road.

My Project

The Sphero is a ball that the students can program through an iPad. Last year we got a generous donation of mini iPads and I did lessons in programming. The students had to use math, creative thinking skills and to work in teams. The Spheros, with protective covers, are the next step, it will allow the students to code and see the results right away. They will be able to play, use logical thinking skills and challenge themselves and their teammates to be problem solvers. As my students learn to code their self-confidence will grow and this should help them in their other classes. Regular attendance is a challenge at our school and my hope is when classes are fun and enjoyable the students will want to come to school. Success in one class will hopefully lead to success in other classes.

The donation of the Spheros will improve my classes by making learning fun and igniting a passion for students to explore the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

When people find a positive passion they are willing to work hard to succeed in life. My students may find that passion in STEM.
