Getting "their own magazines" would be such a treat to these children--making them feel special, igniting interest in science and showing them the world beyond rural Oklahoma. My students may not have magazine subscriptions at home--and these Scholastic articles would bring smiles for sure!
The children in my classroom are hungry for learning, especially about how things work and why things happen.
Many come from poverty, but they are rich with enthusiasm, hope and creativity.
While it was a given that many of us ordered Scholastic Books each semester, buying books and magazine subscriptions is not the norm for my students. By helping fund this project, you would be gifting this diverse group of children something each child can keep, reread, take home to share with their families and call their own.
My Project
Sharing these well-written, age-appropriate and BRAND NEW, just-for-them, magazines would fuel conversation and help me teach science and reading all year long. I can imagine the excitement of handing the magazines out each month to my classroom of students who would be especially eager to explore each new issue because the magazines are theirs to enjoy.
Two magazine subscriptions may seem small, and even inconsequential, especially if you are accustomed to getting mail, magazines and your own books.
In my classroom, this learning tool would be a gift the children would enjoy over and over as they explore science, plus they would be so appreciative of getting monthly reading material meant just for them.
