Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is full of eager learners, and they hit the ground running from the moment they walk through the door! A huge chunk of our morning is "Integrated Literacy", where we integrate literacy and science. The goal is to teach science concepts through literacy... and we use experiments to help!

I teach in a K-5 magnet school that uses a social studies theme.

Our school has grown exponentially over the last few years. We now house 720 children from K-5, and follow a common-core integrated curriculum which is developed by our district. My school in particular is unique because of our population. In my classroom of 20 students, 13 of them come from homes where English is not their first language. We have varied economical backgrounds in my classroom, and the children come from many different types of families. What remains the same for each of the kids is their eagerness to learn as much as they can, about every little thing they are interested in! I try to tap into this as much as possible, and teach the children about things they want to learn (in addition to our curriculum, of course!)

My Project

These ecoSTEM kits will be used in two different settings in my school. I will use the PolliNation kit to teach our science unit about bugs, metamorphosis, and the science of pollination to my awesome group of first grade students. Part of this is in our curriculum, but this kit will give us the ability to experience hands-on learning and build our own pollination habitat! We will be planting seeds and building a habitat for pollination so my students can experience this first hand. In addition, we will spend time building a habitat for monarch butterflies and viewing those butterflies under microscopes. The Energy ecoSTEM kit will be used as an enrichment resource for a club that I will be running with some of the upper-grade students. We will be exploring how to create our own cost-efficient, renewable energy, and we will explore what makes a circuit and how to build circuits. I am especially excited to let the kids explore solar energy!

The donation of these ecoSTEM kits to my classroom will allow me the opportunity to provide hands-on science activities and experiments, so that my students can learn through observation and experience.

This is invaluable in any school setting, and it will help my students become independent thinkers and problem solvers!
