This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are self-aware, resilient, and internet-savvy young adults who are criminally underserved by our current educational system. They show me tremendous amounts of grit and humor every single day in the classroom. They are opinionated, strong, and have a deep sense of fairness and justice.

Our area has a high degree of poverty and gun violence; Roughly half our student body are English Language Learners.

As a teacher of color, I feel tremendously committed to helping them speak truth to power. I hope that through this DonorsChoose page that I am able to improve their material conditions and create a stronger learning experience.

My Project

At my school, we care deeply about building a culture of reading. Having a diversity of books in the classroom allows students to find a book that they will enjoy reading. Every day in Homeroom, we read for 20 minutes at the beginning so it's very important that students find a book they like!

Besides culturally relevant books, the classroom set of headphones will help my students with special needs access more literature online.

My new science curriculum involves a lot of reading and writing, so a renewed interest in reading will be fundamental to their ability to engage with rigorous, grade-level material.
