Our school has nearly five hundred students, K-5. It’s one of the largest elementary schools in Portland, Maine. Our demographics continue to dramatically change for our students. Our children seem to be in a constant state of emergency. Many of our students are struggling with the effects of trauma due to homelessness and witnessing/experiencing various types of violence as well as substance, emotional, and physical abuse.
It is more important now than ever to help build resilience in our students through compassionate teaching.
The success of our students is dependent on providing them the social-emotional learning supports that are needed for them to flourish into healthy human beings, including self/social awareness, self-control, healthy relationships, and responsible decision-making skills.
My Project
My project is a list of carefully selected books to help support children to be resilient human beings, including building self-compassion, self-awareness, and self-esteem to support their emotional development.
I want to be a compassionate and powerful influence in helping children to develop the social-emotional skills necessary to be resilient human beings.
Fiona Flamingo is a beautifully written book that delivers the message that despite her changing color, she learns to accept not only being different from the rest of her flock but it's okay to experience a range of comfortable and uncomfortable feelings. This book is powerful in helping children to understand, accept, manage their feelings, and build resilience.
