Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom involves reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I want my students to be more aware of what is happening in the world around them. My greatest challenge in getting them there is being able to provide them with age-appropriate real-world texts.

My students are hard-working English Language Learners.

They are Mexican-American, Korean-American and Indian-American students. Being in the heart of Los Angeles, my students are growing up in continually growing urban neighborhoods. Their families work hard to ensure they have a high quality education by applying and sending them to a public magnet elementary school. Our school is a Title I school with 86% of the students receiving a free breakfast and lunch. The need for non-fiction texts is important for my students. My school focuses on health science and the body systems. Time for Kids offers a variety of non-fiction articles, including health and body.

My Project

My students often complain that we only get one class ball to use during recess. Some students have been bringing in their own balls to use during recess, but we had to stop the practice after problems emerged. One student suggested that we get more equipment and I couldn't agree more.

The equipment I want to get for my classroom will be specifically for students to use during recess.

Sure I will be able to use the equipment to model and teach games during P.E., but students need this equipment to continue to play with each other during their free time. Not only will my students be able to play learned games, they can begin to teach each other their own kid-created games.

Learning how to be part of a team, organizing play around a set of established rules, building confidence and friendships, and playing with others are part of our hidden curriculum. Students will gain so much having plenty of tools to choose from to engage in play with one another during recess and P.E.!
