My students need recycling bins, poster board, markers, colored pencils, poster shapes, and books about recycling to help expand our school's recycling program.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is located in inner-city Los Angeles and many of them come from low-income families. Many of their parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet and are not always able to provide even basic school supplies for their children. Many of the students also do not have regular access to books and literacy, or even regular homework support, and therefore rely heavily on the teachers and other school staff to support their academic needs. Despite this, however, they are an eager bunch of students who come to school ready to learn new things every day. They are inquisitive about how things work and why things happen, and even though I don't always have the answers, they trust me to guide and teach them the best I can.
My Project
Our school creates an incredible amount of trash each day and I know we can recycle more of our trash if students developed a habit of recycling, instead of simply throwing everything away. The goal would be for all people on campus to throw away their trash in the right bins and not even think twice about it. In the two years since I've taken on our school-wide recycling efforts, I have begun expanding our education efforts to not simply my own classroom of students, but to students in other grades, and I think we can keep expanding it to build environmental awareness in more children and adults at our school.
With these materials, students ("recycling ambassadors" )will begin to visit other classrooms and educate students about what materials are recyclable, which bins are for recycling, and the significance of recycling.
Students will use a variety of art materials such as markers, chalk markers, and colored pencils make posters that give information about what materials are recyclable. Using these posters and other signs, they will also encourage picking up trash, discuss where trash goes when people litter on the ground, and how that affects our larger community and world we live in. I will also use the literature and read-aloud books to inform and educate these students about recycling, composting, and other environmental issues that are prevalent in our everyday lives. Hopefully, they will be able to pass on this knowledge to other students and members of their family.
