This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our high school special education classroom is studying social studies and would love to study the world in color! My students in grade 9-12 are studying locations around the world and working on map skills utilizing black and white copies of maps. Students currently have access to a world map on the wall and a globe.

Having access to a classroom set of atlases would allow each student the opportunity to complete classroom activities at his or her own pace.

My students are all on IEPs and require modified work at their individual level and ability. Providing each student access to an atlas while in class will help me ensure each student is provided the time needed to successfully complete an assignment with the help of colorful pictures.

Building real world skills, including map skills, will help prepare students to be active members of their communities while traveling to work, volunteer opportunities, the grocery store, and more. Students may also get the opportunity to plan a trip or learn about a place that sparks their interest. My goal is to help students build skills while in my classroom through engaging lessons and classroom activities.
