This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning to read and write can be tough, especially when you're learning a second language at the same time! All of my students are learning English as their second language. I teach a second grade bilingual class in an urban school. Our school is a Title One school and nearly all of the students qualify and receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast. These students are faced with many economic disadvantages, struggles, and stress from their communities and homes. However, they come to school every day eager to learn.

Learning to read and write in a new language can be difficult and sometimes even frustrating, yet my students never give up!

My goal is to make sure that my students don't feel that frustration when they are trying to decode new words or formulate complete sentences so that they can successfully write a story. My goal is to help students build fluency and continue to be passionate about reading even though it may be hard sometimes.

My Project

My students love to read books and engaging with text! However, since many of them have recently moved here from a Spanish speaking country they are still learning the foundational skills of reading. These skills include the alphabet, phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, and fluency. Reading Rods Phonemic Awareness Kit, Word Building Kit and Sentence Building Kit will help my students master these necessary skills.

My students will benefit from learning these skills through hands-on activities!

This kit will allow students to manipulate sounds to make words. Once they have mastered this skill they will then learn the foundational phonics skills to be able to build sentences using all parts of speech to enhance their writing. My students want to progress and become better readers and writers and I want to supply them with the necessary tools they need to be successful!
