Building Reading and Language Skills Vicariously Through Recreational Reading

Help me give my students a classroom library of books in different genres to build their connection to reading for vocabulary development and comprehension.

My Project

I am the new school librarian for a school with a nearly 50% Hispanic student body. These students’ English language proficiency ranges from newcomers, with no literacy in English, to highly proficient English speakers with some deficiencies in either reading fluency or comprehension. Our library program is only 2 years old with less than 5% resources that meet the interest and reading levels and language proficiency of these students. To further complicate matters, our library facility is under construction (projected opening Fall of 2023).

As a vital step to curing this resource deficiency, this project will help build a Travelling Learning Language Library (TLLL) to bring accessible books to our ELL classrooms.

I will schedule visits through their teachers to bring the books and facilitate reading sessions. This TLLL is carefully curated to include books in Spanish, Spanish/English Bilingual, and English languages/formats of both fiction and nonfiction genres/subjects to match the various reading levels and interests of our English language learning students. This project will also nurture the students’ appreciation of recreational reading to vicariously develop their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills. (Note: Once our library facility is complete, these materials will become a part of our greater collection.)
