Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There are no computers in my classroom. The students also only have access to a very small classroom library that I have been able to get through yard sales, etc.
In my classroom there are 38 sixth graders.
There are very few books for the students to read and we do not have any computers in the classroom. My students are from a very poor area of Bakersfield, Ca. Many of their parents are farm workers or migrant workers earning little to no money at all. These students do not have the money to purchase books to read, as many homes have more than one family in them. All of my students are currently reading below grade level, which is also affecting their learning in all other academic areas. My goal is to get them reading for fun in order to improve their reading and comprehension level. I feel that the more reading I can get these kids to enjoy the better prepared they will be for reading in the future.
My Project
With these tablets the students will be able to find and read books that our classroom, school and their homes are not able to provide. Also the students will be able to take Accelerated Reader tests, which test their comprehension of the story. In the sixth grade the students also start learning how to research information and create an informational document based on what they have found. Since my students do not have any computers in the classroom they will miss out on this very valuable learning opportunity. I do not want my students to miss out on learning opportunities or have to go any further in their education when they read at such a low level. I feel that this is my year to make a change in their education and show them they can be and do anything through being successful this year!
This project is important to me because these students are important to me.
I have poured every extra penny into these kids that I can! These kids need to know that they are important and that their education is important. Creating successful adults starts today in my sixth grade classroom!!!
