Building Readers Through Book Clubs

Help me give my students Flat Stanley books to enhance their reading and writing skills by sending Stanley on adventures in our community.

My Students

I am a teacher in a small, elementary, Brooklyn neighborhood school. I am teaching third grade. My students are from diverse backgrounds and range in academic abilities from non-English speaking students to advanced learners and include general education, as well as special education students. My students are heterogeneously grouped. Many of my students face academic struggles and are in need of extra support.

My enthusiastic students are full of energy, love to express themselves, and actively participate in our classroom activities.

They are always ready to go on a new learning adventure. In September, they returned for in-person learning. My students love to learn and are eager to come to school everyday.

My goal is to give them the best learning experience and make it a memorable year. My responsibility is to guide my students to become more independent to prepare for the rest of their academics. I believe the more engaged my students are, the better outcomes they will have.

My Project

My students are building a love of reading. As we enter the second half of the school year, I would like to introduce my students to book clubs.

Book clubs promote a love of literature by encouraging critical thinking and accountability.

Flat Stanley is a character loved by children. My students will participate in various activities which will benefit our school community. They will create their own Flat Stanley and take their imagination as far as they can go.

The benefits of participating in a book club will give my students endless opportunities to participate in discussions and take an active role in learning.
