This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a class of 26 eager learners! We are making great progress in reading and I want to help them fall in love with books. My number one priority as a second grade teacher is to introduce my students to the world of language and to help them explore that world through rich and powerful texts.
My students face many challenges.
Some of these challenges include poverty and homelessness. Most of my students qualify for free or reduced meal plans. Over half of my class are English Learners. Despite the difficulties my kids face each day, they come to school eager to learn. They work hard and try their best. They are my heroes and I love being their teacher! Our staff is remarkable. We offer support to our students and their families before, during and after school hours. The dedication of every person working at our school is amazing. We truly care about our students and work tirelessly to help them achieve against some pretty heavy odds. We have created a caring and nurturing environment for the children we serve and you can feel it throughout our campus.
My Project
Many of my students are currently reading far below grade level. They do not have access to books in their homes which severely limits their opportunities to read. In my classroom, reading is the number one priority for second grade. All other academic success is dependent on this skill. I work with my students daily to increase their literacy but the MUST have the additional practice of reading outside of class. In order to facilitate this additional exposure, I am asking for books that are at my students' reading levels that will interest them so that they can become stronger readers and fall in love with books.
