Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My urban 3rd graders need learning experiences that will support their oral language and content knowledge while keeping them motivated to learn.

Most of my students are English learners who love learning.

Unfortunately they do not have the content and academic vocabulary in English to follow along with textbooks.

They need opportunities to work in small groups to build and construct their learning using hands-on materials instead of just reading about it in textbook. They need to love science and connect it to their love of learning.

My Project

My students struggle to understand our science textbook because of its content vocabulary and concepts. While the information is important, there are not enough hands on activities to support the reading. STEM is key to helping my mostly inner city English learners build content knowledge they need to support their English language learning and give them the background in science they will need to be competitive in middle school and high school.

Science is not a favorite subject of my 3rd graders, why not?

They don't connect the textbook they read with the natural ways they learn and love science. Kids love playing with LEGOS and designing buildings or modes of transportation. They don't connect this with the Engineering and Design process. These educational LEGO materials will be an important part of our unit on Design where students will identify problems, develop possible solutions, create models and test their prototypes, communicate solutions and redesign as needed.
