My Project
Our district uses SecondStep social-emotional curriculum for SEL activities throughout the year. The curriculum consists of puppet stories, pictures and discussions, skill practice activities and a book on the weekly topic. I am finding that the library does not have most of the recommended books. Therefore, I would like to build our classroom library to include the recommended books to support my students' social and emotional development.
Social and emotional skills are critical to teach in the early years. This project will ensure that we have an appropriate book to support each of our weekly topics. Topics include following classroom rules, naming and managing feelings, ways to calm down, speaking up assertively and inviting friends to play. I also teach the Child Protection Unit, which includes topics such as ways to stay safe, safe and unsafe touching, and what to do when faced with unsafe scenarios. This project includes a comprehensive list of books that support both programs.
