My students need books such as The Snatchabook, The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes, Sorry!, etc. to help them engage in discussions about what it means to be a good citizen, how to be true to themselves and how to repair harms.
Academic learning is vitally important; however, it is not the only learning students need to be successful. Knowing how to get along with others, maintain self-control, and fix mistakes is an integral part of being a productive member of not only our 6th grade class but also the global community.
We are one of 3 sixth grade classes in our school of just under 600 students.
We have over 50% English Language Learners, with Spanish being the predominant native language. Students here receive both free breakfast and lunch daily. They come from all walks of life, from experiencing family, home, and financial stability to homelessness and frequent familial upheaval. But, most importantly, they come to our school to learn and be cared for and learn to better care for others.
We have a dedicated time each day in our schedule that we call Restorative Justice. During that time we discuss what it means to be a good listener and friend and how to safely interrupt bullying. We will use these books to enter into conversations about how to be true to ourselves, gain and maintain friendships, and prevent bullying. My goal is that students leave my 6th grade class with the confidence to be themselves and help others.
School is about learning, but there is more to learn in life than just academics.
Learning to be actively engaged, authentic, and kind people. By building a library of literature about making good choices, being kind to others, and how to repair harm when they have caused it. I plan to encourage my students think outside themselves and improve the world around them.
