My Students
"I don't like reading"; "Reading is hard"; "I don't understand all these words"; these are just some of the comments from the students I've had come through my classroom over the years...but the comments are changing thanks to E-Readers such as the Nook.
I am an intervention teacher of 4th and 5th grade students.
My class is comprised of a diverse group of learners, who are eager to absorb as much as they can while in the classroom. Some find it a little harder than others, and some are reluctant readers and avoid a good book at all costs. This attitude is changing now, thanks to a new donation of e-readers (Nook Colors) in the classroom. They are now fighting over who gets the Nook during reading time. What a blessing this has been. My students really WANT to read now!
My Project
Building our Nook library is going to be the key to continue keeping the students' attitudes towards books a positive one. I have seen first hand how the Nook has grabbed my students' attention the way a "plain, old book" didn't. The Nook allows the reader to interact with the story; reads the story to them if they want; enables them to find meanings of words with the embedded dictionary; even some illustrations come to life; there are interactive activities built in to some books that help build a child's comprehension and more importantly their desire to read more. My students need that excitement and engagement, encouraging them to open their minds to a whole new world of discovery and exploration every day.
If you support this project, you should know that every child in my classroom for years to come will be impacted.
Be at peace knowing that you are encouraging a child to get "lost" in a book in so many ways and appreciate the art of writing within a whole new medium.
