My students need a rolling marketplace, pretend food, and a cash register to help foster their understanding of financial literacy.

Guiding young children in simple choices now will give them the needed experience and confidence to make their own decisions as they continue to grow. Children begin to understand notions of cost and value in their kindergarten years. Kindergarten is the perfect time to start building financial literacy skills, as kids learn about coins, wants and needs, and how to spend money. Creating a mobile marketplace will help introduce money basics and put young children on the path toward financial literacy.
Dramatic play is important in a young child's life. Can you picture it? There is a kindergarten kid dressed up as a farmer. All of a sudden, here comes another kid. They are pushing a shopping cart, ready to shop for fresh food. Well, it's a good thing we have a marketplace right there in our classroom. The kids can talk about shopping for food and making wise decisions about finances. On another day, the classroom store is set up and a chef has to purchase items for his cafe. The chef will write a grocery list, read the list to the store workers, and then he will get to the register. They will need to use their math skills to figure out how much money the chef needs to pay and use money to purchase the groceries. Our classroom will be a mini version of real life. Kids will be a part of our classroom community and practice being a part of the larger community through dramatic play. They will learn and practice a variety of skills that will help them become contributing member of society and help them decide on a career to pursue. This project will help make dramatic play based learning more accessible in my classroom, and help students become more financially literate. The children will be utilizing real life skills through dramatic play. They will be communicators and problem solvers, and will have opportunities to learn and practice a variety of skills. All this experience will help them build their understanding of a variety of different jobs in our neighborhood and will help them start to think about what they want to be when they grow up.
