My Students
When I started a ProjectLIT book club this fall, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Imagine my delight when 46 students signed up!
These students are passionate about books and deeply committed to social justice.
They give up their lunch and recess to join in important discussions about the books we read. They believe in the power of books and are eager to share their love of reading.
So often students read only because they are required to. I love that these students are choosing to read and making that choice with so much enthusiasm.
My Project
Just Mercy by Brian Stevenson is a powerful book about the profound injustice in our criminal justice system. It tackles institutionalized racism, mass incarceration, and the death penalty. 60 students in grades 6-8 want to read this book. It isn't for a class assignment. They want to read it because they care about these issues.
They will learn so much from reading this book and this knowledge will help them become more informed in their activism and their service.
After we read the book, we'll meet to discuss it. Then, we'll go together to see the movie in January. Finally, we will hold a fundraiser and a book drive for incarcerated youth in our community.
