Building Our Classroom Library

My students need nonfiction books on their reading level. I have found that these text peaks curiosity and student growth is exponential when these are used in class.

My Students

Do you remember how fascinating volcanoes, dinosaurs, animals were when you were a kid? My kids LOVE these nonfiction books, but we lack nonfiction books own in our classroom that are on their reading level. My kids WANT to read, and I WANT to provide them with the books they love to read!

My students are in a North Carolina school with a high poverty rate.

Many of these students come from broken homes, and do not have good role models to show them that reading can be interesting and fun. Our school was built in 1950, but has a few updates to make it a safe learning environment for the students. While many of my students are impoverished, they do not lack the natural curiosity of the "normal" second grader. The love to learn new things and are always excited to go to the school library to check out new books. Unfortunately, our library is rather small, and the informational text selection is smaller still. When in guided reading groups, my students beg for books about "real things" but our guided reading resources are also lacking in this area. My students are fascinated by the world around them. Please help them reach out beyond their immediate surroundings and learn more about the interesting facets of our planet!

My Project

My project will provide leveled texts for my students so that they can independently check out and read books on their level during the school day. These books are leveled, allowing students to immediately know if the book is OK, too easy, or too hard for their reading level. If a child finishes his or her work early, he or she can simply walk to our classroom library and check out an interesting book that he or she can read independently. I also allow students to take our classroom library books home, as long as they are returned the following day. This gives the students a chance to read a familiar book to parents, siblings, or other family members. With repeated readings, fluency and comprehension both increase. My students need the opportunity to read books about the world beyond the reality in which they currently live. Without showing them that their IS more outside of poverty, how can we expect them to rise above and expect more of themselves?

While I have only been in this profession for three years, I have noticed a startling trend.

Student's reading levels tend to grow exponentially when informational text is used in guided reading and encountered throughout the school day. I do not yet know if it is because these books pique their natural curiosity, but I will do whatever it takes to help my students grow to love reading and become life-long learners.
