My Students

My students are truly the best. They come to school every day eager to try new things in order to grow personally and academically. They are truly an inspiration to me.

They deserve an environment that is cozy and comfortable that promotes learning.

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My Project

In my elementary classroom, carpet time is one of the most important times of our day. Carpet time allows me to see my kids demonstrate whatever concepts we are working on and allows positive learning interaction between my students.

I design my carpet time around language arts and math.

My language arts concentration is on phonics and spelling. Math encompasses a variety of topics, especially whatever I have noticed my kids having difficulty with. Our carpet time usually lasts approximately 45 minutes to an hour focusing on these topics and story time.

Our classroom carpet is also a great place for class discussions. Students can hear me better, I can hear them better, and they can hear each other better when we’re all in a group on the carpet. It’s a smaller space, so even the quieter students can speak their minds without too much difficulty. I don’t have to project as much, which makes me seem “softer,” if that makes sense. Redirection doesn’t seem so harsh, reassurance seems even kinder.

There’s something really nice about everyone sitting together as a group on the carpet. It feels like community.
