Building Number Sense Just Makes Sense!

My students need 23 counting abacuses, which will help build their foundational number sense.

My Students

Do you remember when you first learned to count? Much of a student's fundamental number sense is based on his/her ability to count forwards and backwards, add on and take away. An abacus is an incredible visual and tactile tool that helps build these skills for young mathematicians!

My students benefit from our school's focus on educating the whole child.

They participate in developmentally appropriate activities that build their physical, social and emotional skills as much as their academic understandings. My students absolutely love learning in this environment, because every day is a challenging yet fun experience where they can question, explore and interact with a variety of topics in a safe space. I have 23 students in my classroom, and the majority of the academic day is spent in small groups and centers so that students can maximize their independent practice of key concepts. At the beginning of the year, most of my students are still working on building foundational number sense. Most of them can count to 10 on their fingers, however, they are working hard to master more difficult concepts of counting backwards, skip counting, as well as addition and subtraction.

My Project

An abacus is a tool that is incredibly engaging for a student. It allows him or her to slide a bead from one side of the other to count forwards and backwards, visualize the idea of adding on and taking away, as well as demonstrate concepts of skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. Instead of simply memorizing the facts, my students are engaging with mathematical concepts that will provide them with a rich foundational number sense to build upon in later years.

Imagine each child sitting on the rug with their abacus.

I give them a scenario to demonstrate. For example, three students are sitting in the cafeteria, and seven more join them. How many are there all together? All 23 students begin to slide the beads over to visualize the problem and find the solution. The abacus will set all of my aspiring mathematicians up for success in a real, tangible way.
